Speaking Freely

"Greetings, this is Kevin calling you today from Indianapolis Indiana. I'm working with Jim Leo of PitFit Training. Jim is an athletic trainer who trains motorsport athletes. Being one of the those, I found it important to come here and start a training program. For more information see the press release elsewhere on the website. Now to training! Wow this is tough but it'll be good. Cheers and bye for now."

Indianpolis Motor Speedway Museum. After my two days of meetings and workouts at PitFit, I couldn't resist a quick stop at the Speedway's museum. I've been several times before but this time was particularly taken with the review of Rudi Caracciola's trophy collection that had been bequeathed to the Hulman family upon his death. Such history...

"Woo Hoo! This is Kevin calling from the track where the Compass360 team finished 3rd, 6th and 9th. It's the first time that the Team has had all three cars finished in the top 10. My co-driver Christian and I had a very strong and good run, from 27th to 6th place at the finish. I'll update more when I can. Right now we're packing up the trailer. Thank you and Cheers."

Thursday's day-end debrief

24-01-08_1418.jpg
75 car after prep. by the C360R team - before qualifying.

After suffering and working through the frustrations of both practice sessions, the whole team of C360R sat down to discuss qualifying.

For our car (#75) it was decided that I would qualify - and thereby be the starting-driver for the race as Grand Am's rules dictate.

With fifty cars on-track, it was certain to be thrilling!!

With rain threatening - and indeed starting to fall near session's end - it was time to find a spot for a "clear lap" and go quickly.

Ultimately we qualified three point two seconds away from pole position. Our PR time of 2:12.582 finds us starting in the middle of the ST grid in twenty-seventh position.

One thing to remember as I prepare for rest tonite can be found in the words of Australian V8 SuperCar driver, Russell Ingall:

"I'm a racer, not a qualifier!" :-)

Cheers and goodnite - we'll update more later.

Tomorrow, we race!

"Hi, it's Kevin. Well we've completed one practice session and we are waiting for the second. Our first practice session had many problems. We encountered a broken throttle cable on the 75 car. I was able to repair the car at the side of the track, get back in and completed the drive. My teammate Christian then got in the car and was able to get a few laps and also all in all a fairly frustrating session but the car felt good. We have a second session and then we have qualifying at 5:00. ___ Cheers."

"Hi this is Kevin speaking freely to you via SpinVox. It's a verbal way for me to update this blog without access to a computer. Just a phone. Our 1st event is this week at the Fresh From Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway. We look forward to that event and looking forward to keeping you updated as quickly as possible through this method. Cheers."

Continues...

So, this is now me typing...

The use of SpinVox will allow me to keep you all updated with the freshest information - during a race event - via my cellphone.

Whenever you see the heading Speaking Freely, you'll know it's an update from my phone to the blog!

From SpinVox' website, here's how it's done:

SpinVox has a job to understand everyone. But it’s the one job it’s very good at. How does it do it? It captures spoken words and feeds them into a Voice Message Conversion System, known as ‘D2’ (the Brain), and spits them out as text content.

So D2’s pretty smart. He’s bound to be, as he’s a combination of artificial intelligence, voice recognition and natural linguistics. But he also learns from us humans. He learns all the time about how we speak, and what we say, from the mundane to the ridiculous.

And even the smartest machines need a helping hand if they are to stay clever: help to understand and digest new words or phrases to ensure that he is converting what you mean to say.

Over the past four years D2 has been chomping through our words, converting millions of messages from millions of different voices and accents, in English, French, Spanish and German. But now he’s onto his main course and he wants to feast on your words to make him bigger and stronger.

Up next! 2008 KONI - Fresh From Florida 200

FreshFromFlorida200.jpg*

As of 11 January 2008, ninety-five race cars are entered in round one of the KONI Challenge Series!

From the Daytona International Speedway's website:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 27, 2007) - "Fresh from Florida" will return as the title sponsor of the 2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series at Daytona International Speedway, DIS officials announced today. The "Fresh from Florida 200 at Daytona" will run at "The World Center of Racing" on January 25, 2008 prior to the prestigious twice-around-the-clock 46th Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 26-27.

"Fresh from Florida" is the logo of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' worldwide marketing campaign, a program that promotes Florida's 280 commercial crops to consumers throughout the United States and around the world.

Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner, Charles Bronson says, "We couldn't be more excited about sponsoring this year's race at Daytona. Last year was a great success and it just makes good sense to build on what we've started."

"We're proud to have Fresh From Florida return as title sponsor for one of the most exciting weekends here at DIS," said Speedway President Robin Braig. "The Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Fresh From Florida 200 will offer fans some of the most competitive road-racing on the Grand-Am circuit."

The Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series is sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association, the premier road racing organization in North America.

Tickets for the Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend are available online at www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

Day 3 - Daytona Test Days

KONI CHALLENGE SERIES LOGO copy.jpg

Strong finish in final session.

Working with fellow C360R team member, Adam Burrows, we found additional time around Daytona.

Driving on track with car-to-car communication, Kevin and Adam talked to one another as they worked in their high-speed offices - the stealthy ACURA TSXs!

Final results for the sixth and final session found them in the top eight of times for the KONI Challenge Series' ST class.

Next up? Back to Daytona for Round 1 of the 2008 season!

Day 2 - Daytona Test Days

Karl and Turtle talking about the 75 car's engine data. Kevin was involved too but couldn't resist the photo-op. seen here...

Today saw the C360R team make additional progress in the true spirit of testing. Continued development of systems proved insightful. Staring at laptop screens filled with the results of data acquisition, revealed many details that will prove fruitful. We will continue to work our plan and build our speed in segments - that will then be put together when it really counts - race day!
