Today Kevin York announced that he has agreed terms with Hooked on Driving (HOD), a high performance track day and performance driving school, to join them as Chief Driving Coach and Group Leader for the Northeast Region.

Speaking of Kevin's agreement to join the HOD team, Northeast Region Owner Operator Joe Mills said,
"I am looking forward very much to working with (Kevin)! He certainly ha(s) a very impressive competition, driving and coaching resume. (We are) thrilled and honored to have (him) participate as a coach with Hooked on Driving."

Hooked on Driving was established by David Ray as a track day organization that emphasizes safety, fun, and improving one's driving skills in an encouraging environment.

Hooked On Driving puts drivers of street cars from all manufacturers on a closed road course with a coach in the passenger seat to help guide them through the fundamentals of performance driving in a no-pressure atmosphere. Learn "the line," what an apex turn is, and gain a more in-depth appreciation for your cars true performance potential. The event groups drivers by experience and skill level and offers teaching sessions after each session on the racetrack. Session times will be broken down by experience levels so beginners don’t have to worry about making a mistake or getting in the way of those with more track time. The Hooked On Driving Program truly caters to drivers of all levels and can help anyone gain confidence and skills behind the wheel.

Each group has five track sessions during the day which is time enough to wear out most drivers - and create a lifetime memory. All you need to provide is a car in good working order (of any brand), a helmet, and a desire to learn and have fun. Lunch is provided too!

Kevin will join the HOD Team at the HOD Northeast Region's April 23-24th event at Watkins Glen International Raceway in New York state.

6 March 2008 | Danville, Virginia

Camp Motorsport announces the return of Kevin York as Chief Instructor for the 2008 season!

Camp Motorsport - a race car driving sports specialty summer camp for kids ages 10-16 - is a unique fusion of racing school, life-skills development, and traditional summer camp. “This camp is really about teaching kids how to be good drivers for their future, regular day-to-day street driving. However, it’s provided in the fun context of a motorsport paradigm.” notes York. “Additionally, the driving instruction at camp is provided in a way that will help kids develop their emotional intelligence. They build confidence and learn to respond with good reactions while striving for precision.”

“We are very excited that Kevin will be returning to oversee the driving instruction component of our program.” shares Camp Director Diane Tyrrell. “He is an excellent instructor; his methods of teaching and coaching the campers are a perfect match for our program. He has the ability to nurture each child’s driving skills - and their understanding of them - and give them the right kind of encouragement and challenges to help them progress to personal success.”

“Camp Motorsport uses racing as a tool in teaching skills that campers will use in life, and through his driving instruction, Kevin is a really big part of assisting kids with that process” notes Tyrrell.” We are about helping transform the lives of youth through the camp experience. What the kids take away from being at camp in terms of personal growth and development is very powerful.”

And the horsepower driving the camp experience goes beyond the racing instructional environment- beyond the “need-for-speed”, Camp Motorsport has a strong focus on teambuilding. “Racing is a team sport, and the success of the driver depends on how well the entire team works together. Cooperation, learning how to develop relationships and to work closely with others is not only key to racing success, but also to success in life.” shares Tyrrell. “The resident camp experience helps kids learn to take responsibility for their actions, decision making, building independence, and learning respect for self and others. “Kevin and his instructional staff work with the kids in a manner where they use four-wheels-and-a-seat as the tool to help kids develop positive character traits”.

Camp Motorsport’s focus on driving and racing education uses curriculum designed to help kids become better, safer drivers. Instruction focuses on precision, defensive driving; campers learn to apply good car control techniques along with an understanding of handling dynamics. Camp Motorsport attendees enjoy one-week sessions, and live on-site at VIRginia International Raceway. VIR – near Danville, Virginia - is nestled on 1300 acres of rolling hills & woods, complete with fishing pond, swimming pool, and playing fields. While at camp, campers not only enjoy their own motorsport program but are also surrounded by VIRginia International Raceway’s daily activities, Campers also enjoy all of the fun activities of a traditional summer camp, such as campfires, fishing, sports, swimming, etc.

Kevin York debriefing a Camp Motorsport driver.

There is also an academic aspect to the program as well, where campers use applied hands-on math & science, like figuring out how resistance and drag impact the aerodynamics in making the car go faster. Campers also have opportunities to explore various careers in the racing industry. Camp Motorsport has a strong commitment to helping children learn to be responsible citizens of the natural world through their racing technology-based environmental education program, where campers explore such topics as alternative fuels, fuel efficiency, and applied science to better use resources and protect the environment.

Camp Motorsport is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Kevin York has been a motorsport competitor, instructor and coach for nearly two decades.

He rejoined the Grand American Road Racing’s KONI Challenge Series in 2008, Partnering with the 2007 championship-leading team, Compass360 Racing. In 2007, C360R helped to bring Acura its second consecutive Manufacturers’ Championship. In addition to being the Chief Instructor at Camp Motorsport, York’s resume of high-performance instructional experience includes working with ProFormance Racing School, Speed Secrets Race and Performance Driver Coaching, International Race Drivers Club, BMW CCA foundation’s Street Survival Teen Driving Safety Program, as well as for several chapters of the BMW Car club of America. Additionally, York owns and operates a motorsport-industry consultancy.

Starting from deep in the 97 car field of the Grand Am KONI Challenge Series’ season-opening race, Kevin York of Compass360 Racing (C360R) knew he’d have lots of work to do in order to move to the front.

Without any hesitation, his first moves were made on the opening lap with York passing several competitors’ cars.

York advanced into the top fifteen of cars in the Street Tuner (ST) class when, near the mid-point of the three-hour race, a fortuitous caution period occurred on track.

The C360R team took the opportunity to provide service pit stops and driver changes to all three of their Acura TSXs.

York handed an unscathed car over to co-driver Christian Miller – who continued the charge forward during his stint. Miller drove smartly to fifth place until a long brake pedal on the #75 GoEnzo.com, 034 Motorsport, C360R TSX did not allow him the normally-present great braking of the car. As a consequence, a competitor slipped by, placing Miller in sixth position at the race’s end – which occurred under yellow flag conditions.

All of the Compass360 Racing’s team cars finished in the top ten. This was a remarkably strong showing at the season’s first race. Karl Thomson and Travis Walker finished third, York and Miller in sixth and Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood, 2007 ST champions, finished ninth.

York of YORK Motorsport is racing in the Grand Am’s KONI Challenge series in 2008. He has been a motorsport competitor and coach for nearly two decades.
With many new and challenging firsts to encounter, Kevin York traveled to Daytona International Speedway recently for pre-season testing for the Grand Am’s KONI Challenge Series.

With his new team, Compass360/Racing, Kevin had a new group of crew members and driving teammates to meet. Important among those to get acquainted with was new co-driver, Christian Miller.

Of course, another important member of the team was there also – the C360R Acura TSX #75.

“I was immediately comfortable in the car,” enthused York. “C360R crew chief, Ray Lee, clearly has great ability to assemble a first-class car. The crew and he worked hard and smart all weekend long as I and my teammates came to grips with testing.”

“Each session was an opportunity for me to learn more about the TSX. I certainly feel that it’s going to be a competitive platform this season.” noted York.

Indeed, York was eighth fastest in Sunday’s afternoon session, five-hundredths of a second from the pace of fellow C360R teammate and 2007 KONI Challenge Series champion, Adam Burrows.

The Compass360/Racing team will be ready for the 2008 KONI Challenge Series' first race to be held at Daytona International Speedway on January 25.

Full-season effort with unique, new sponsor.

14 November 2007 | Charlotte, North Carolina

Kevin York will rejoin the Grand American Road Racing’s KONI Challenge Series full time in 2008.

In doing so, Kevin will again partner with 2007 championship-leading team, Compass360/Racing. The team ultimately finished second in the 2007 ST class Drivers’ Championship and helped to bring Acura its second consecutive Manufacturer’s Championship.

Joining Kevin in his association with Compass360/Racing will be a new and exciting marketing partner, unique to motorsport.

“I am extraordinarily pleased to be associated with Karl Thomson and his successful KONI Challenge team, Compass360/Racing for the entire 2008 season,” enthused Kevin. “Grand Am has grown and matured as a motorsport property, and so too has Karl’s team. The momentum that the team has from its fantastic 2007 season will carry forward into the upcoming one without doubt!”

“Additionally, look for the details of my new marketing partner to be revealed in the Spring of the 2008 season as part of a structured roll-out. I expect everyone will be reading about it when they are formally announced in May.” noted York. “We are very excited about it and the fans will be, too!”

The Compass360/Racing team will be ready for Grand Am's Daytona pre-season test in early January. The 2008 KONI Challenge Series' first race will then be held a few short weeks thereafter. The team will be displaying a bold new livery design that's completely in sync with the street tuner scene and the team’s actively involved sponsors.

31 October 2007 | SEMA Show, Las Vegas, Nevada

With the 2008 racing season's planning activity in full force, Kevin York is on the cusp of a stirring announcement.

"We've had conversations with a team who's visiting the SEMA show and the Grand American's KONI Challenge season-ending awards ceremony. We're also in active talks with a potential marketing partner that is unique to motorsport. If all comes to plan, we should be able to make an official announcement in the next few weeks." York commented yesterday afternoon.

The Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series is Grand-Am's showcase for the latest in international and American-made high performance sports cars, coupes and sedans straight from the dealer showroom floor. With major modifications permitted only in the area of safety, the KONI Challenge Series is home to the same cars seen on streets and highways around the world every day. The 2008 season marks the eighth year that Grand-Am has owned and sanctioned the KONI Challenge Series, which was previously known as the KONI Challenge Series Series before KONI signed-on as the title sponsor of the series in late 2006.

The starting fields for KONI Challenge Series races typically feature more than 50 of today's hottest import and domestic production cars that usually race together while competing for both class honors and the overall victory. Series races--which will be 400 kilometers in length except for the three-hour season-opener at Daytona and twin six-hour events to close the season at Virginia International Raceway--are primarily run as the featured support events for the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve, although the KONI Challenge Series will step into the spotlight with a few feature races of its own in 2008. Too, a strong television coverage package is slated for announcement.

Like the Rolex Series, the KONI Challenge Series is made up of two classes of race cars. The big-bore Grand Sport (GS) class features a rules package that allows exotic international machines like the Porsche 996 and 997, Nissan 350Z, BMW M3 and others to go head-to-head with American iron such as the Pontiac GTO and the Ford Mustang GT. The smaller Street Tuner (ST) class is Grand American's offering to the import and compact car crowd, with the Mazda RX-8, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Dodge SRT4, Mini Cooper S, Acura RSX and TSX, a variety of BMWs and other models eligible.

All KONI Challenge Series classes run on Hoosier tires, and at least two drivers must drive in each competing race car under green flag conditions, making at least one driver change mandatory.

Since 2007, the KONI Challenge Series has included a separate points race for competitors using KONI shocks, which will be considered an independent championship throughout the season. This "championship within a championship" will be worth $10,000 to the top point earners in both the Grand Sport (GS) and Street Tuner (ST) classes using KONI shocks.

GRAND SPORT (GS)

The Grand Sport (GS) class is made up of several factory sports and muscle cars from around the word with minimal performance modifications, but full safety systems. Minimum weights range from 2,900 lbs. to 3,300 lbs.

Engines are tuned to produce between 350 and 405 horsepower depending on the car, and the competition is further equalized by a variety of fuel tank capacities that range from 19 gallons for the Porsche 997 to 20 gallons for the BMW M3, Pontiac GTO, Cadillac CTS-V and Ford Mustang. Top speed for most GS cars is 160 mph.

STREET TUNER (ST)

The Street Tuner (ST) class features a variety of sports cars and high-performance compacts that are as equally popular with KONI Challenge Series competitors as they are with today's consumers. Unlike the bigger GS class where V-8s are allowed, ST is limited to four- and six-cylinder engines, although turbochargers and superchargers are permitted.

Engines produce between 170 and 240 horsepower depending on the car, while minimum weights range from 2,200 lbs. to 3,125 lbs. Fuel tank capacities range from 16.9 gallons to 17.9 gallons in the Mazda RX-8. Most competing ST cars have 17-gallon fuel tanks, including the Acura RSX-S, and the BMW 330i. Other popular vehicles in the ST class include the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged, Acura TSX, Subaru Legacy and the Mini Cooper S. Like the GS class, the only major modifications allowed in ST are in the area of safety. Top speed for ST race cars is about 135 mph.
