Camp Motorsport - a race car driving sports specialty summer camp for kids ages 10-16 - is a unique fusion of racing school, life-skills development, and traditional summer camp. “This camp is really about teaching kids how to be good drivers for their future, regular day-to-day street driving. However, it’s provided in the fun context of a motorsport paradigm.” notes York. “Additionally, the driving instruction at camp is provided in a way that will help kids develop their emotional intelligence. They build confidence and learn to respond with good reactions while striving for precision.”

The 2008 season of Camp Motorsport begins in early July and runs into the month of August.

“We are very excited that Kevin will be returning to oversee the driving instruction component of our program.” shares Camp Director Diane Tyrrell. “He is an excellent instructor; his methods of teaching and coaching the campers are a perfect match for our program. He has the ability to nurture each child’s driving skills - and their understanding of them - and give them the right kind of encouragement and challenges to help them progress to personal success.”

“Camp Motorsport uses racing as a tool in teaching skills that campers will use in life, and through his driving instruction, Kevin is a really big part of assisting kids with that process” notes Tyrrell.” We are about helping transform the lives of youth through the camp experience. What the kids take away from being at camp in terms of personal growth and development is very powerful.”

And the horsepower driving the camp experience goes beyond the racing instructional environment- beyond the “need-for-speed”, Camp Motorsport has a strong focus on teambuilding. “Racing is a team sport, and the success of the driver depends on how well the entire team works together. Cooperation, learning how to develop relationships and to work closely with others is not only key to racing success, but also to success in life.” shares Tyrrell. “The resident camp experience helps kids learn to take responsibility for their actions, decision making, building independence, and learning respect for self and others. “Kevin and his instructional staff work with the kids in a manner where they use four-wheels-and-a-seat as the tool to help kids develop positive character traits”.

Camp Motorsport’s focus on driving and racing education uses curriculum designed to help kids become better, safer drivers. Instruction focuses on precision, defensive driving; campers learn to apply good car control techniques along with an understanding of handling dynamics. Camp Motorsport attendees enjoy one-week sessions, and live on-site at VIRginia International Raceway. VIR – near Danville, Virginia - is nestled on 1300 acres of rolling hills & woods, complete with fishing pond, swimming pool, and playing fields. While at camp, campers not only enjoy their own motorsport program but are also surrounded by VIRginia International Raceway’s daily activities, Campers also enjoy all of the fun activities of a traditional summer camp, such as campfires, fishing, sports, swimming, etc.

There is also an academic aspect to the program as well, where campers use applied hands-on math & science, like figuring out how resistance and drag impact the aerodynamics in making the car go faster. Campers also have opportunities to explore various careers in the racing industry. Camp Motorsport has a strong commitment to helping children learn to be responsible citizens of the natural world through their racing technology-based environmental education program, where campers explore such topics as alternative fuels, fuel efficiency, and applied science to better use resources and protect the environment.

Camp Motorsport is accredited by the American Camp Association.
